THE STORY OF CHRISTMAS

1.  The PLACE where Christ was born

"Oh little town of Bethlehem how still we see thee lie. "

Micah 5:2 - "But you Bethlehem, though you are small among the clans

of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel. "

Luke 2:4 - "So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea to Bethlehem the town of David ... "

0 little town of Bethlehem how still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep; the silent stars go by. Yet-in thy dark streets-shine-th the everlasting light.

The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

2. The WAY in which Christ was born.

"For Christ was born of Mary"

-A sign for the shepherds: Luke 2: 12 - "This will be a sign to you: you will find  a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

-A sign for the Jews: Isaiah 7:14 - "The Lord Himself will give you a sign. The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel."

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above.

While mortals sleep the angels keep their watch; of wandering love. 0 morning stars together proclaim the Holy birth.

And praises sing to God the king and Peace to men on earth.

3.  The HEARTS into Which Christ is Born

"How silently the wonderous gift is given."

There are three types of gifts:

  • A response gift
  • An appreciation gift
  • A grace gift

Ephesians 2:8 - "For by grace you are saved through faith  ... it is the gift (the grace gift) of God."

How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given.

So God impart to human hearts the blessing of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming but in this world of sin,

where meek souls will receive him still the dear Christ enters in

4. The PRAYER for Christ's abiding presence:

"O come to us abide with us our Lord Emmanuel."

0 Holy Child of Bethlehem descend to us we pray,

Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell,

0 come to us; abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel.
